Wildlife is meeting plastic at every depth

From Bay prey fish to blue whales feeding offshore, California research shows where exposure happens. Proving population-level harm is the harder next step.

What researchers actually observed

38% of sampled prey fish had consumed microparticles

Fibres appeared in fish across the Bay. The regional study estimated 0.2–0.9 non-fibre microplastics and 0.6–4.5 plastic fibres per fish.

What this means: local prey species are exposed. The study did not test toxic effects, so it cannot tell us whether those levels harmed the fish.

About 10 million pieces per feeding day for a blue whale

Researchers combined whale tag data, prey measurements, and depth-resolved particle counts. Most estimated exposure came through krill, not directly filtered seawater.

What this means: the estimate reveals scale, not a diagnosed injury. The study did not establish what this exposure does to whale health.

Laboratory exposure reduced reproduction

A controlled experiment reported altered energy use, fewer eggs, lower sperm motility, and reduced larval output after exposure to polystyrene microspheres.

Important limit: controlled conditions support a causal result for that experiment, but its particle type and exposure conditions do not represent every wild oyster habitat.

Wild seabirds showed altered gut microbiomes

Emerging

In 85 northern fulmars and Cory’s shearwaters from Canada and Portugal, greater microplastic exposure was associated with fewer beneficial microbes and more pathogens, antibiotic-resistant microbes, and plastic-degrading microbes.

Important limit: this field study found an association, not proof that microplastics alone caused every microbiome change or that the changes led to illness.
